Sweden in NATO

At the meeting of NATO Defence Ministers in Brussels on 5 June, member countries’ defence ministers agreed on new capability targets for the Alliance. In conjunction with the meeting, Swedish Minister for Defence Pål Jonson also signed a number of agreements on behalf of Sweden.

The Government has instructed the Swedish Armed Forces to contribute SEK 550 million to NATO’s support to Ukraine.

On 4 June, Sweden’s Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will travel to Brussels to take part in a meeting held within the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG). Mr Jonson will take part in the meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence the day after, also held in Brussels.

On 2 June, Lithuania will host the Vilnius Summit to discuss support to Ukraine and key issues ahead of the NATO Summit in The Hague on 24–25 June.

On Tuesday 6 May, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson received Iceland’s President Halla Tómasdóttir for bilateral talks at Rosenbad. The meeting took place in connection with Ms Tómasdóttir’s three-day State Visit at the invitation of HM The King.

On 6–7 May, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will travel to Rovaniemi in northern Finland to take part in the Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO) defence ministers meeting.

In May 2026, Sweden will host the informal meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs. Helsingborg has been confirmed as the location of the meeting.

On 3–4 April, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard will take part in the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Brussels, which will lay the groundwork for the NATO Summit in The Hague. Cooperation with countries in the Indo-Pacific will also be on the agenda.

The Government has submitted a bill to the Riksdag regarding Sweden’s participation in an air defence operation to protect and maintain the security of military and civil support to Ukraine. Sweden will also contribute to enhanced Air Policing, NATO’s strengthened airspace surveillance, in Poland in mid-2025.

Saturday 15 February, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson presented the Royal Order of the Polar Star to former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. The Order was conferred on Stoltenberg for his extraordinary efforts for Swedish interests.

Today, 12 February, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard presented the Government’s 2025 Statement of Foreign Policy in the Riksdag. The Government’s foremost foreign policy priorities are support to Ukraine, security cooperation, and gender equality and women’s empowerment.

On 13 February, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will attend a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels. The day before, he will take part in a meeting with the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG), at which support for Ukraine will be discussed.

The Heads of State and Government of the Nordic and Baltic countries have today appointed the former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to prepare an independent report with policy recommendations aimed at advancing Nordic-Baltic security and defence cooperation.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard has presented the Royal Order of the Polar Star to US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken.

(New version) Today, 3 December, Sweden and the United States have signed a statement of intent on enhanced cooperation between Swedish and US special forces. The contents of the statement are secret, but it will allow for enhanced operational and capability-developing cooperation between special forces.

Yesterday, 21 November 2024, the Nordic Ministers of Defence met in Copenhagen to discuss how to further strengthen Nordic defence cooperation (NORDEFCO) and take stock of the progress made under the Danish Chairmanship in 2024.

On 20–21 November, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will take part in a meeting in Copenhagen with other defence ministers from the Nordic and Baltic countries.
