Sweden is running for a seat on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council. The Council is the IMO’s executive organ comprising 40 members. The candidacy is for the 2026–2027 term.
“Sweden intends to remain a strong voice in the IMO to enable effective and inclusive international regulatory development. The World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö plays a key role in global regulatory development in relation to shipping. A seat on the IMO Council allows Sweden to become an active and engaged host country for the WMU. Sweden also aims to inspire and demonstrate leadership regarding issues that strengthen global shipping’s continued development. We want to push for competitive and sustainable shipping,” says Minister for Infrastructure and Housing Andreas Carlson.
The election will take place during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly in November 2025. The IMO Assembly meets every other year and comprises all 176 IMO Member States.
