Head of UN Refugee Agency UNHCR on Sweden visit

“The global refugee situation is worse than ever. Never before have so many people been forced to leave their homes, and the number continues to increase as conflicts become more numerous, protracted and violent. Sweden is a proud partner to the UNHCR – a key actor in the global refugee response. We’re therefore pleased to welcome High Commissioner Grandi to Stockholm for important discussions on the challenges facing global development assistance and the UN system in an increasingly complex global context,” says Mr Dousa.

In 2025, the number of forcibly displaced people is expected to reach new record levels of over 122 million. The UNHCR works globally to protect people who have been forced to flee from war, conflict, persecution or natural disasters. The UNHCR is on the ground in several regions, including Syria, where it is supporting the return of 500 000 Syrians who have so far returned since the Assad regime collapsed in December 2004. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UNHCR assists refugees with shelter and protection-related interventions, including for women and girls who have been subjected to gender-based and sexual violence. The UNHCR is also an important crisis response actor in Ukraine, working for early reconstruction and long-term solutions to the refugee situation.

“The UNHCR is an important partner in the Government’s work to support displaced people, build capacity in host countries and on refugee quotas. This Government prioritises women, girls and LGBTIQ refugees, who are some of the most vulnerable refugee groups. I also appreciate the UNHCR’s assistance with returns and discussions on innovative solutions,” says Mr Forssell. 

Mr Grandi’s visit to Stockholm will be his last to Sweden in his current role as High Commissioner for Refugees, as he will conclude his assignment at the end of the year, after a decade of leadership. During his visit, Mr Grandi will also be received by HRH Crown Princess Victoria, Sida Director-General Jakob Granit and Diana Janse, State Secretary to the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade.
